Armstrong Has Unforgettable 48 Hours at New Smyrna WS

February 20, 2015 - The last 48 hours have been unforgettable for young Late Model racer Dalton Armstrong. On Thursday night, the New Castle, Indiana driver won his second race in two nights by winning the PPG Pro Late Model 100 at the 49th Annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway (FL).
The 20-year-old started on the outside of the front row and took the lead from polesitter Ryan Miles on the opening lap.
Armstrong maintained a strong pace throughout the event, but that was due to the pressure he was getting from Matt Wallace for the top spot.
Armstrong and Wallace, who split the pair of PLM feature on Wednesday night, had an exciting battle for the top spot on a cold night in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
Caution flew on lap 40 when Jordan McCallum spun in turn two.
During the caution, Wallace went to pit road with ignition problem. His crew swapped out ignition boxes in time for him to return for the green flag.
On the restart, Austin Nason would move to second and challenge Armstrong for the top spot.
The battle got heated up in the final stages of the race as Nason would make numerous attempts to get by Armstrong on the inside line. But, Armstrong was strong on the outside and continued to hold off Nason.
In the final laps, Armstrong would get a car length between him and Nason and drive to the win.
“He got me a little nervous when he (Nason) went under me a few times,” Armstrong told Speed51.com powered by JEGS. “I just kept on digging, I knew I could hold him off as long as we didn’t touch each other and wreck.
“Good job to him for not running dirty. I just can’t believe it, first win last night and to back it up with another win is pretty awesome.”
After the race in victory lane, Nason said he tried everything to get by Armstrong in the closing laps.
“It was a pretty equal race, he was good on the outside,” Nason said. “I got a couple of runs on him and just couldn’t get it done on the inside.”
Nason’s second place run was negated as he failed post-race inspection due to a left-side weight infraction.
Spencer Davis was credited with finishing second with Derek Scott Jr. rounded out the podium. Fredrick Moore was fourth and Sheldon Creed completed the top-five.
The Pro Late Models will be back in action on Friday night at New Smyrna Speedway with a full racing program including the Richie Evans Memorial 100 for the Tour Type Modifieds.
